When talking about the effects of chemo it’s important to understand what it is and what it does. So, what exactly is chemo then? Chemo can be defined as, “a type of cancer treatment that uses oneor more anti-cancer drugs as part of a standardized chemotherapy regimen. Chemotherapy may be given with a curative intent, or it may aim to prolong life or to reduce symptoms". This treatment has been around since the 1940s and has a huge success rate for things like breast cancer and bladder cancer treatments with a success rate of 75%-78%.
How long does chemolast?
Chemotherapy on average can last from 3 to 6 months for a person, and each cycle of chemo lasts about 2-6 weeks. The first treatment can last from 5 minutes to 8 hours. Most people may feel very tired and dehydrated after their first treatment, so it’s important that they drink a lot of fluids and get plenty of rest. After the treatment is administered, and you have been cleared for any allergies to the treatment, you are free to go home the same day.
How does chemo effect the hair?
Chemotherapy can take a toll on your hair right after your first cycle of treatments. A person may notice that they are having hair loss, from the medication, all over the body in places such as their head, legs, lashes, eyebrows and genitalia. Hair loss is inevitable as the cells that makeup hair follicles are compromised by the medication during the treatment, making hairs fall out at the root. It is highly recommended after the first treatment session to shave your head as some people may feel pain from the shedding of hair.
