Shaved ice, rising temperatures, flipflops, and frozen margaritas can only mean one thing: Summer is gearing up! And that means that blonde highlights are coming back into style. You’ve probably had blonde highlights, which means you know all the challenges associated with them, if so, jump down to section #2 where we’ve got the goods and deets on getting great blonde highlights for this summer. If not, we’ve got some care tips for you!
1: Caring for Blonde Highlights
As unusual as it might seem, there is some care that needs to be taken with blonde highlights. What isn’t immediately obvious about blonde highlights? They absorb color more easily! Which means that the minerals in your water, UVz rays from the sun, and chlorine from pool water can give those beautilicious blonde locks a metallic color. To learn more about this (and discover some discounted products for your summer do!), check out our last blog post. The obvious is that blonde highlights need LOTS of hydration. Similar to a vivid hair coloring process (Not sure what that is? Check out out here!), the highlighting process can cause dryness and breakage which makes hydrating masks after the initial highlight extremely important.
2: Getting Great Blonde Highlights
Ok, here’s what you’ve been looking for! While you can get highlights at pretty much any salon, the best kind of highlighting for your hair is going to be done with organic products. Why? Non-organic bleaches utilize products like Ammonia (You know that cleaner that you’re not supposed to get on your skin? Yeah, that… EW!) and other harsh chemicals to strip your hair of its natural color but also its natural protecting layer and oils. This results in highlights that need constant deep hydration (beyond the initial deep hydrating masks you should use after a color lift) and have breakage even with regular hydration. These kinds of highlights leave the hair fragile and “sick.” Think of it as if you’ve stripped away your hair’s immune system: that’s what non-organic bleaches do to your hair. If it’s lightened enough with harsh chemicals, your hair can even become scrunchie-like and rubbery. Getting blonde highlights can be a scary process, but it doesn’t have to be! We absolutely love the OWay HBleach, because it avoids all the nasty side-effects that harsh bleaches create, which is why it’s our primary color lifter. On occasion, the gentler bleach can’t lift deeper colors and we use small portions of the clean and gentle bleaches (Like BlondeMe). But if you come into Ippodaro and smell bleach, 99.99% of the time it’s the lovely OWay HBleach that avoids harming your hair. You CAN get those beautilicious blonde highlights without crunchy and scrunchie ends to your hair, you just have to find the right salon…! And since summer is around the corner, we’re dropping some summer sales this month. For the whole month of April, any purchase of 2 highlighting treatments (honestly girl, it’s best to highlight in portions to allow your hair to rest between lightening sessions: even with organic bleach) upgrades the treatment to a Highlighting and HMilk Treatment.
What’s HMilk?
Glad you asked! Remember how we said that deep hydration is important after bleaching? Well, HMilk is exactly that. It is a versatile conditioning mask that replenishes your hair’s hydration after a bleach and works with your toner to avoid all those nasty brassy tones that are so common to blonde highlights.
